The story
The Cedar of Lebanon (Cedrus libani), sometimes called the Cedar of Mount Lebanon, is a species of coniferous tree in the Pinaceae family. Native to Lebanon as its name suggests, the Cedar of Lebanon is a national emblem, prominently featured on the country's flag.
In Lebanon, the cedar tree is found starting from an altitude of 1,500 meters in the mountainous vegetation zone of Mount Lebanon.
The Cedar forests of Lebanon, within present-day Lebanon, have been extensively exploited since ancient times for the construction of sacred monuments and Phoenician, Assyrian, Roman, and Egyptian ships. Due to its naturally durable and resistant nature, cedar wood has also been used for crafting sarcophagi and tombs.
Once covering a larger part of the Lebanese territory, the ancient cedar forests have now dwindled to discontinuous patches due to deforestation caused by human and climatic influences.
